How Separel® works?

  • Thousands of air permeable hollow fiber membranes are potted and encapsulated into a polypropylene housing
  • Liquid flows on the shell side of the membrane contactor while the vacuum is applied on the lumen side
  • While the liquid is impermeable to the dense membrane, gases permeate to the lumen side (under vacuum) and are expelled to the outside by the vacuum pump
  • The driving force behind moving gases out of liquid is a concentration gradient between dissolved gases in liquid and gas concentration in the lumen side
  • Deeper the vacuum applied to the lumen side, the greater is the gas removal
  • Only air passes through the membrane to the vacuum side
